SECTION 1.
Sir Edward Grey to Sir J. Jordan.
(No. 53.) Sir,
Foreign Office, February 5, 1907. WITH reference to previous correspondence, I transmit to you a copy of a letter from the British and Chinese Corporation,* relative to the action of the Chinese authorities in proceeding with the construction of a line from Soochow to Kashing, and also of an additional line direct from Shanghae to Kashing,
I am by no means confident that His Majesty's Government could contend that the last-mentioned line would injure by its competition either the Shanghae-Nanking or Soochow-Ningpo Railways, or that the construction would constitute an infringement of the Agreements concluded by the Chinese Government with the Corporation respecting those two railways.
I shall be glad to receive from you any observations which may occur to you in regard to the matter.
I am, &c. (Signed) F. A. CAMPBELL.
* British and Chinese Corporation, January 25, 1907.
